[med. and mod.L. erroneous spelling of L. pirus pear-tree. Adopted by Linnæus (Hortus Cliffortianus (1737) 189) as a generic name.]
A small tree of the genus so called, belonging to the family Rosaceæ and widely cultivated for the sake of its blossom or its fruit, the pear; also, a tree or shrub once included in this genus and now in a separate one, esp. the japonica (Chænomeles species) or the rowan (Sorbus species).
