Jablochkoff|ˈjæblɒtʃkɒf|
The name of Paul Jablochkoff (1847–94), Russian physicist, used attrib. and in the possessive to denote an electric arc lamp invented by him (now obsolete) in which carbon rod electrodes were placed side by side and separated by an insulating material such as plaster of Paris, which gradually melted as the electrodes burned away.

Lighting vii. 99 The lighting of the Avenue de l'Opera in Paris in 1878 by Jablochkoff candles first demonstrated the possibility of street lighting by electricity. 1894R. M. Walmsley Electr.
