narrow gauge
1. The smaller distance from each other at which the two rails are laid on some railways, involving a corresponding narrowness of carriage. Freq. attrib. See gauge n. 3.
Formerly applied to what is now the British standard gauge of 4 ft. 8½ in., as opposed to the broad gauge; now confined to gauges less than this, or than some corresponding standard.
