1) 在美国英语，后面可以用 to inf. （但英国英语较少用 to inf.）。

• ... had hope for an opportunity to start work on a novel. (Current Biography, Jan., 1966)…曾经希望有机会动手写一本长篇小说。

2) 美国英语有时候还可以在 opportunity 后面加 for + 名词成分（但英国英语也少用）。

• … opportunities for broad university reforms are endless. (George W. Bonham. Change, March-April, 1969)…进行大学改革，有无穷的机会。

3) opportunity 后面也可以加 for + 动名词，但无论在美国或英国英语都较少使用。

• ... gave him an opportunity for thinking and writing. (Current Biography, July, 1965)…给了他一个进行思考和写作的机会。

4) 美国和英国英语都可以说 opportunity of + 动名词（但是近几十年来在美国英语中 of + -ing 往往被 to inf. 所代替）。

• He seldom loses an opportunity of dispraising the present, of showing his profound pessimism. (The Journals of Arnold Bennett, ed. Frank Swinnerton)他几乎不放过任何一个机会诅咒现状，显示自己深刻的悲观主义。

5) 美国和英国英语都可以说 opportunity of + 名词成分，但是不如用动名词多。

• "This," I said, "would give us an opportunity of long-needed talks..." (Sir Winston Churchill, Closing the Ring)我说：“这一来我们就会有机会进行早就需要的商谈了…”

至于 opportunity 前是特指的 the 或是不特指的 a，对于后面的定语如何选择，似乎无关。
