A hydrated form of sodium borate, Na2B4O7.4H2O, that occurs as large transparent crystals and is used as a source of borax.
1927W. T. Schaller in Amer. Mineralogist XII. 24 The new mineral kernite, Na2B4O7.4H2O, was received through Hoyt S. Gale..and is reported to occur in quantity in the southeast corner of Kern County, California... The name kernite is proposed. 1930Prof. Papers U.S. Geol.
