Either of two enzymes which together convert methylglyoxal to lactic acid in the presence of glutathione; orig. considered a single enzyme.
1913Dakin & Dudley in Jrnl. Biol. Chem. XIV. 423 The catalyst..effects the rapid conversion of methyl glyoxal into lactic acid... We propose that it be named ‘glyoxalase’. 1951Ibid. CXC. 685 The first step consists in a condensation reaction between methylglyoxal and glutathione catalyzed by an enzyme referred to in this paper as glyoxalase I.
