a. As an inseparable formative element in chem. names, indicating the presence of a methoxyl group, as methoxy-acetophenone, methoxy-benzoic adj., methoxy-pyridine, methoxy-succinic adj.; meˈthoxychlor, a crystalline compound, (C6H4OCH3)2CHCCl3, of similar chemical structure to DDT, which is used as an insecticide, esp. for veterinary hygiene.
