dikaryon Biol.|daɪˈkærɪən| Also dicaryon. [a. Fr. dikaryon (R. Maire 1912, in Mycol. Centralblatt I. 214), f. di-2 + Gr. κάρυον nut, taken as = nucleus.] A pair of unfused haploid nuclei of opposite mating type in a cell or spore which divide simultaneously when the cell divides; also, a dikaryotic cell, spore, or mycelium. Hence dikaryˈotic a., containing a dikaryon; composed of dikaryons.
1913W. B. Grove Brit. Rust Fungi i. 5 The two adjacent nuclei are said to be ‘paired’, and together they consititute a synkaryon or dikaryon. 1941Bot. Rev. VII. 393 A dikaryotic hybrid may be defined as a hybrid made up of dikaryotic diploid cells, i.e. cells containing a conjugate pair of haploid nuclei. 1947C. E. Skinner et al. Henrici's Molds, Yeasts & Actinomycetes (ed. 2) i. 9 The mycelium with paired nuclei of opposite ‘sex’ which divides conjugately is known as the dikaryon or is described as dikaryotic. 1971Nature 30 Apr. 552/2 [They] report the successful growth in vitro of the corn smut (Ustilago maydis) dikaryon. Ibid. 552/3 It is the fusion of two of these non-pathogenic haploid cells which gives rise to the pathogenic dikaryotic mycelium. |
