■ landslide

原意是“山崩”、“塌方”，本来是灾难。

• The 12 year-old boy was miraculously rescued after being buried in the landslide that hit his village. (Yonhap, April 9, 2007)这个十二岁的男孩，山崩袭击他的村庄时他被埋住了，但后来却奇迹般地被抢救了出来。

但是这个词的转义却是喜庆的，指选举中的压倒性胜利（当然也是对方“山崩”般的失败，但这个词是从胜利者的角度来使用的）。

• She won a landslide election in 1990 but was never allowed to take power.她在 1990 年选举中获得了压倒性的胜利，但是一直没有得到允许执政。

但是也有从失败者的角度来说 landslide 的。

• McCain could easily lose in an electoral landslide. That is the private view of Democrats and Republicans alike.(Jim VandeHei & John F. Harris, Politico, Aug. 30, 2008)麦凯恩可能很容易在一次一边倒的选举中落败。这是民主党人和共和党人私下都一样的看法。

landslide 还可以作为及物动词，仍然是从胜利者一方的角度，表示“在…中取得一面倒的胜利”。
