[ad. Ju Chou, the name of a town in Honan, China.]
Used to designate pottery with buff body and blue-green glaze produced in Ju Chou in the 12th century.
1906W. Burton Porcelain vi. 57 Dr. Bushell mentions a fine piece of Ju-Yao in his possession, which, however, has a delicate greenish glaze with no trace of blue. 1936Burlington Mag. 4/1 The original Ju ware was made at the potteries at Ju Chou. 1949G. Savage Ceramics for Collector ii. 44 The kiln was in operation only for about twenty years, and at one time the ‘ying ch'ing’ type was identified with Ju ware. 1969Times 9 Dec. (Taiwan Suppl.) p. vii/2 The 24 items of Ju ware are the best of the porcelain. 1972Collector's Guide June 95 Ju ware, only identified as recently as 1936 by Sir Percival David, is much rarer than Ting.
