Gr. ἄγκιστρον fish-hook + ὀδούς, ὀδοντ-tooth, former genus name of the snake from which the enzyme is obtained, with alteration of -gk- to -nc- following the usual model for Gr. transliteration.]
An anticoagulant protease that lowers the concentration of fibrinogen by cleaving fibrin in the blood, and is given intravenously in the treatment and prevention of some kinds of thrombosis.
