1) 凡是表示“从何时到何时”，包括时刻、星期几、年月日，通常都用 from... to... 的形式。

• We are open from 9:00 a. m. to 6:00 p. m.本店营业时间为上午九时至下午六时。
• We are open from Monday to Friday.本店星期一至星期五营业。
• I lived in the UK from 1985 to 1992.我 1985 年至 1992 年住在英国。

但是，在美国英语中，如果后面那个时间单位是有长度的，而且全部长度包括在范围之内，则往往不用 to 而用 through，而且（说星期几或月份时）前面的 from 可以省去，也可以保持，但年份不可以省去 from。

• We are open (from) Monday through Friday.本店星期一至星期五营业（星期五那一天包括在内）。
• We camped there(from) June through September.我们六月到九月在那里宿营（九月那一个月包括在内）。
• I lived in the UK from 1985 through 1992.我 1985 年到 1992 年住在英国（1992 年那一年包括在内）。

英国英语则多说

• I live in the UK from 1985 to 1992 inclusive.

但是，如果是时刻，就不能用 through 代替 to，例如不能说：*from 2 through 6 p. m.，因为时刻只是个点，没有长度。

from... through... 一头一尾的两个成分，不一定是时刻、日子之类的名词成分，也可以是与一定时间点相联系的事物或事件。

• It is time to give the police every shred of detail from the moment the man was introduced to you and spent time at your home through your recent correspondence.事到如今，你就应该把所有细节都一五一十提供给警方，从人家如何把这个人介绍给你，他如何在你家中住了一段时间起，直到你们最近的相互通信在内。

2) through 可以是个介词（后面有宾语），也可以是个副词（后面没有宾语），阅读时要善于辨别。例如：

• If the St. Lawrence seaway goes through the familiar banks of the Lachine canal may encompass six lanes of automobiles instead of one lane of lake ships. (The Gazette, Montreal, March 21, 1952)

这里的 through，后面有名词成分 the familiar banks，似乎是介词，但是再看下去，the familiar banks 其实是后面句子的主语，所以 through 则这里是副词，goes through 是一个词组，全句可以译成：“如果劳伦斯水道开通了，人们熟悉的拉欣运河的河岸将并列六条汽车道，而不是现在的一条湖泊船只道。”
