A Hindu ceremony in which a woman chooses her husband from amongst several contenders; a symbolic representation of this, preceding an arranged marriage.

XLV. 17 A solemn assemblage, called the Swayambara, or self-election, where the princess is to designate the favoured suitor by throwing a wreathe of flowers round his neck. 1863M.
