作“地球”解时，earth 可以有定冠词 the，也可以没有（此时要大写成 Earth）。大体上，就地球本身的范围来议论地球，或是稍为扩大一点，谈论地球同月球 (the moon) 和太阳 (the sun) 的关系，通常要说 the earth 或 the Earth，以保持和 moon 与 sun 三者一致都用定冠词 the。

• The Earth has to be directly in front of the sun and moon. The eclipse occurs when the shadow of the Earth is crossing the moon. (The Daily Gazette, Schenectady, New York, March 3, 2007, A3)需要地球转到太阳和月球前面。当地球的影子掠过月球时，就发生月食。
• If the sun warms the Earth too dangerously, the time may come to draw the shade. (The Associated Press, Nov. 16, 2006)如果太阳给地球加温加得太危险，那就可能到了要把遮阳罩拉上的时候了。

但即使如此，也有宁可不一致，Earth 前面也不加定冠词的。

• The Moon circles Earth. Earth circles the Sun. (Kids Discover)月球绕地球。地球绕太阳

（所有天体的专有名词首字母都要大写，前无 the；只有 Sun，Moon 与 Earth 三者首字母可大可小，其中 Sun 和 Moon 无论大小写都必须有 the，Earth 首字母大写前面可以有也可以没有 the，小写则作为星球必须有 the）。Earth and the moon are closer to the sun than Mars. 地球和月球比火星更靠近太阳。甚至单谈地球时，也有不加定冠词的。

• Marine sediments reveal that the meteor hit Earth 300,000 years before the mass extinction.海底沉积显示，该流星是在生物大量灭绝之前三十万年撞击地球的。

地球与其他行星一起被谈及时，通常一律不加定冠词（其他行星本来就不要定冠词）。

• Venus and Earth are very similar in size.金星和地球的大小差不多。
• Instruments aboard the craft... show that Venus and Earth are not just sister planets but are nearly twins in important ways. (The Los Angeles Times, Dec. 1, 2007)太空船上的仪器…显示了金星和地球不但是姐妹行星，而且在一些重要的方面简直是近乎孪生姐妹。
• On average, Mercury is only about a third as far from the sun as Earth is. That makes the sun 11 times hotter at Mercury than at Earth.水星离太阳的平均距离只有地球的三分之一。因此，水星上的阳光，比地球上热十一倍。

大体上可以说，如果视野限于地球或是地球周围（包括从地球的观点看日、月、地的关系），较多用 the Earth。如果视线脱离地球，远入太空，就较多用没有 the 的 Earth（最末一个例子中，Earth 前面不用 on 而用 at，表示从太空的观点看，地球只是一个几何点而已）。
