An area or landscape, usu. of limestone bare of soil, which has been eroded by solution of the rock giving an extremely dissected surface with conspicuous furrows and fissures, often separated by knifelike ridges.

(ed. 2) iii. ii. 322 Limestones frequently assume a remarkable channelled rugose surface, with projecting knobs, ridges and pinnacles especially developed in high bare tracts of ground.
