A serpent-eater.
1555Eden Decades 14 marg., Ophiophagi. (text) There is nothing amonge theyr delicate dysshes, that they esteeme so muche as these serpentes. 1601Holland Pliny I. 143 The Candei, whom they call Ophiophagi, because they are wont to feed on serpents.
2. Zool. A genus of very venomous serpents allied to the cobra, inhabiting the East Indies, and feeding upon other snakes. One species is O. elaps, the hamadryad, q.v.
