1. A member of a race of subterranean dwarfs who guarded the hoard of gold and treasures sought and eventually taken by the hero Siegfried. Chiefly in pl.

There have been many adaptations of the story, including Wagner's epic music drama Der Ring des Nibelungen (1852–74).
