The name of Carl K. Seyfert (1911–60), U.S. astronomer, who first described such galaxies in 1943 (Astrophysical Jrnl. XCVII. 28), used attrib. with reference to a class of galaxies characterized by bright compact cores that show strong infra-red emission.
