1. A place for tracing or drawing: cf. tracing-house s.v. tracing vbl. n.1 5. Obs. rare—1.

2. Arch. The term given to the intersecting rib-work in the upper part of a Gothic window, formed by the elaboration of the mullion, and to the interlaced work of a vault, and that on walls, in panels, and in tabernacle work or screens. (In Fr. réseau, remplissage.)
In this sense, app. short for tracery work, as according to S. Wren ‘they (i.e. the masons) called it’; this was perh. connected with sense 1 as work designed in the tracery or tracing-house, or executed according to tracings thence furnished; but it may have been formed directly from tracer1 or from trace v.1 senses 9–11; cf. tracing vbl. n.1 3. Tracery-work and tracery were constantly used by Sir Christopher Wren, and taken from him by Plot and Randle Holme, under whose influence it became generally accepted as the recognized name for this work.
