perbromic acid: HBrO4, a strong acid with oxidizing properties that was first prepared in 1968. Hence perˈbromate, a salt of this acid.
Claims for the preparation of the acid and its salts in the 19th c. proved to be mistaken.
1864Chem. News 30 Apr. 205/2 Perbromic acid has been fruitlessly investigated by many chemists, but M. Kaemmerer has obtained it in the most simple manner by treating perchloric acid with bromine. Ibid. Perbromate of potash is more soluble than the perchlorate, and less so than the bromate. 1866Roscoe Elem.
