[The names of Sir Thomas Francis Wade (1818–95), diplomatist and first Professor of Chinese at the University of Cambridge, and Herbert Allen Giles (1845–1935), Wade's successor at Cambridge.]
Used attrib. and absol. to designate a system for the romanization of Chinese script devised by Wade, and subsequently modified by Giles. (Now widely superseded by Pinyin.) Also ellipt. as Wade.
