A herbaceous or woody plant of the genus so called, sometimes as large as a small tree, belonging to the family Bromeliaceæ, native to dry regions of the Andes, and distinguished by rosettes of spiny leaves and blue or yellow flowers borne singly or in large panicles or racemes.
