[app. an altered form of dragonce, one of the 15–17th c. forms of the plant-name dragons (Arum Dracunculus, now Dracunculus vulgaris); the variation of d and t being due to the confusion between dragontia, -cia, and taragontia, -cia, and the inclusion by 16th c. herbalists under Δρακοντία, Dracontia, or Dracunculus, of both Dragons (Arun Dracunculus) and Tarragon (Artemisia Dracunculus); an inclusion commemorated in the existing botanical names.
