Formerly, the process of altering a sound signal by combining it with a slightly delayed recording of itself, played on a machine whose speed is continuously varied by regularly pressing on the flange of its supply reel, thus removing sound of a particular but varying frequency from the combined signal; in later use, the electronic re-creation of this effect by a flanger.
